Obama and Sarkozy Square Off

Whether or not you agree with the French characterization of Obama’s policy, it is worth noting the change in the tone of the U.S.-France relationship. While Bush was in office, the French people despised Bush and Sarkozy was his buddy. Now the French people love the American president while the government is becoming increasingly skeptical of his initiatives.
Either with Chirac or Sarkozy, U.S. presidents find themselves at odds with France. At any rate, the President should plan on sticking to his guns when vital policy is on the line. But alas, inconsistency is one way to damage your allies’ perception of your commitment. Obama has to be very careful when making significant policy changes, especially with regard to international politics.
